If your air conditioner is more than 10–15 years old, requires frequent repairs, struggles to keep your home comfortable, or causes rising energy bills, it may be time for a replacement. Upgrading to a high-efficiency system can improve comfort, lower energy costs, and provide more reliable performance throughout New Hampshire’s warm summer months. Choosing the right-sized AC unit is essential—an oversized or undersized system can reduce efficiency and shorten equipment life. Proper installation is just as important as the equipment itself, ensuring optimal airflow, performance, and long-term reliability. New Hampshire homeowners choose Elite for expert recommendations, quality workmanship, and dependable service that delivers lasting comfort and value.

When Should You Replace Your Air Conditioner?

Knowing when to replace your air conditioner can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns, improve home comfort, and reduce energy costs. While regular maintenance can extend the life of an AC system, most central air conditioners reach the end of their useful lifespan after 15 to 20 years. If your system is aging and showing signs of wear, it may be more cost-effective to invest in a replacement rather than continue paying for repairs.

Common signs that it’s time for a new air conditioner include:

  • Your AC is 15–20 years old or older
  • Repair costs are increasing year after year
  • Certain rooms are too hot while others stay cool
  • Your electric bills continue to rise despite normal usage
  • The system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured and can be expensive to service
  • You experience frequent breakdowns or recurring performance issues

A new high-efficiency air conditioning system can provide more consistent cooling, improved indoor comfort, lower energy consumption, and greater reliability. If you’re noticing any of these warning signs, Elite can evaluate your current system and help you determine whether repair or replacement is the best solution for your New Hampshire home.

Understanding SEER2 Ratings and Energy Efficiency

Type your SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how efficiently an air conditioning system operates throughout the cooling season. The higher the SEER2 rating, the less energy the system uses to keep your home comfortable. Upgrading to a high-efficiency AC can lead to significant energy savings, helping reduce monthly utility bills while improving indoor comfort. Many high-efficiency systems may also qualify for utility rebates or other incentive programs, helping offset installation costs. Although higher-efficiency equipment often requires a larger upfront investment, the lower long-term operating costs can make it a smart financial decision for New Hampshire homeowners looking to maximize value and comfort.

How much does a new AC cost?

Our Trained Technicians can assist you with sizing the proper unit for your home. a typical 5000 sq ft home in NH might run between 5k -16k installed depending on many factors. Some homes can range as much as 20k. But rest assured, we will consider your exact home, your needs, and what you are looking for in features, and get you the best price for your system.

Yes this can absolutely be done.  There are some factors to consider, however.  Does the indoor unit support the energy efficiency rating of today's units? does the indoor unit support the new refrigerant that is required by Law?  Our Technicians will work with you to even replace just parts in your current outdoor condenser if that is what is needed.

We recommend signing up for our maintenance program. This will allow you to have your system running at its top condition.  At a minimum the unit should be serviced every year, but we suggest it should be serviced at the start of the cooling season, and again at the start of the heating season.  Reason is with heat pumps you will be using the system much longer and perhaps through the full heating season.

That is very possible! NH Saves program has many rebate programs that come and go.  Give us a call and we can tell you what programs you qualify for at this time.
